Indie Music Artist Spotlight – GODLUST

Evolving through musical expression. GODLUST was formed by Ash Thorn three months ago, with sounds from mixed up New Wave 80’s to Industrial Goth, there is always something new and familiar. The music started two years ago with the band ASHESANDGOLDUST and had a year stint due to unforeseen circumstances leaving the Duo down to Uno. Not sure what to do, Ash with a passion in music and the arts decided to fly solo and formed GODLUST. The name was actually an accident that occurred many years ago when creating a personal Facebook profile. “I was typing in GOLDUST and GODLUST came out, one of the typos that I actually grew fond of.” Ash Thorn. GODLUST is a work of progress in the making. Occasionally posting tracks to Twitter that have never been heard before! Unlike any other artist in the industry. With an EP just released by GODLUST titled DUST TO DUST that can be found on AMAZON and older music that can be found on Spotify, Itunes, Youtube and Vevo by the former ASHESANDGOLDUST. It is certain that this artist will keep evolving.

1.) What made you want to get into the music business in the first place? Did anyone influence you to do music? If so, who? Influences? Role Models?

I always loved The Cure. I would have to say they are one of my biggest influences. The sound was so different yet so meaningful. It was hearing someone do something different and everyone loving it. It was going against the grain and being successful at it. The music resonates with so many people of that generation and the new generation.

2.) Unfortunately the music industry is full of talented individuals who just don’t get any recognition for their talent and/or work. What do you plan to do to make sure you stand out and get noticed?

Right now with the switch in names I am focused on guaranteeing that nothing other then the name has changed. Of course there will be new sounds and new ideas. There will be less inhibition and more integration. I’m hoping the music will speak for itself.

3.) Would you rather be on a major label or would you rather stay independent? Why or why not?

Yes and Yes. I love the freedom that being independent has but it does have its limitations. It’s not appealing to prospective audiences, and that is always a downfall.

4.) Do you think that the traditional music industry model as we know it is dead? Why or why not?

I want to say yes but I think old habits are hard to break. There are some great musicians out there that hardly ever get noticed and these are some amazing artists but because of industry standards it’s just not happening for them. 

5.) How do you think the internet and social media affected the music industry and how musicians are able to market themselves?

Social media has been a Godsend for musicians because yes they are able to market their own music to their own niche. They have more freedoms when it comes to expression, but again only as independents. Big industries are only focused on making huge profits and are not willing to take chances on these artists. I have heard some amazing artists and I think, if only I had the marketing power I would easily promote them. 

6.) What is the most difficult thing you’ve had to endure in life and has that had any effect on your path to becoming a musician?

This is a very personal question but important. I have had to endure a lot of negativity in my life from the way I dress to the way I present myself. I have heard some very negative things regarding me as a person but I have had to keep on keeping on, because you know even if reincarnation does exist, which I do believe in. We get this one life right now, this one moment to really make something of yourself. You can spend the rest of your life pretending to be someone you’re not, someone you are told to be, not even someone that you know you are, basically living as someone else for other people or you can find who it is that you are, that you love and share that person with the world. I grew up in conservative America being told who I was and what I should be and then it hits you one day, this epiphany! Wait a minute, I am not even being me.

7.) Artists who try to make music for the general public and make more money are usually seen as “sell-outs.” Do you see it that way and if so, what do you plan to do to make sure you make music that is true to your brand and make a good living at the same time without having to “sell out”?
I don’t think you’re a sell out, if you can sing and make a ton of money doing something you love then go for it. It all depends on individual mindsets and their reasons for doing it in the first place. Is it for political reasons? Is it for the love and joy of making music? Is it for the publicity and fame? Sometimes being more famous gets you heard more. It becomes a powerful weapon of sorts. Then again some agencies don’t allow for their products to have much of a voice and that is something else to consider before signing a major record deal. For me, I write my music from the soul, it is very personal to me and it is very “of the moment.” When I feel a song coming I immediately record it. I can’t even say that I prepare the music and lyrics ahead of time. My writing process is very unique. I tend to record (write) everything down after the fact. I let the energies of whatever wants to come through be channeled through me. One can only be liked for who they are and those are the people I care to attract, if they like it they will support me and get a little something out of it for themselves. It’s finding the right audience. I have been very fortunate thus far.
 
8.) When you do music, what would you like your listeners to get out of your music?
I would love for my audience to get out of the music what I get out of it, the emotions and energies that drew me there in the first place.
