New single “True” https://youtu.be/hDiWMfJrqSc
1.) What elements and/or characteristics made you say to yourself that you wanted to do music for a living? Who are your influences/heroes/role models?
Music has always been a passion. I think just the response from school mates and people who paid me no mind in early years and how music caught their attention made me believe I could do it just watching their reaction was night and day.
My influences definitely would be Justin Timberlake, Chris Brown and Michael Jackson!
2.) If you could compare yourself to an already established artist, who would that be and why? If you don’t like to compare yourself, then music-wise, what separates you from other musicians?
I get compared to Chris Brown and Justin Timberlake a lot. My vocals and singing style along with my harmonies would definitely be something I could see why but I do it in my own way. Everyone takes from something they love and adds their own sauce to remix it.
3.) Everyone in life goes through adversity of some sort. Is there anything in your life that has any influence on the kind of songs you write? What is the most difficult thing you’ve had to endure on your path to becoming a musician?
Losing my father was hard. To stay focused and make the big move from Minneapolis to Atlanta was a tough transition I didn’t know anyone and started over. Glad I did.
4.) How do you prepare yourself to write certain songs? What is your song-writing and recording process?
I don’t prepare at all. I go with the vibe. Whatever I feel in the moment that inspiration is what leads me. I just go with it and get in sync with it.
I usually like to start with my hooks because they’re easiest for me to write but sometimes a song may lead me to start with a verse. It’s all about the vibes!
5.) Unfortunately the music industry is full of talented individuals who just don’t get any recognition for their talent and/or hard work. What do you plan to do to make sure you stand out and get noticed? Would you rather be on a major label or would you rather stay independent? Why or why not? In regards to the music industry itself, do you think that the traditional music industry model as we know it is dead?
I aim to create visuals that make my viewers and audience engaged and want to come back for more.
I post the shit out of my music and blast my music to my blog list and DJ friends to get my music heard! Build it brick by brick ya know. Time wasn’t built in a day.
Indie is cool for now because I keep creative control of my music but if a major comes along I wouldn’t decline a good situation. Distribution would be ideal.
Music is ever changing and so is the industry and business aspect of it from marketing to how you even buy and sell music and apps, etc. so its far from traditional nowadays and our job as artists is to evolve with it and get ahead of that curve and set the trends, not follow them.
6.) Are you able to make a living with your music? If so, how were you able to attain a career doing what you love? If not, what do you do in order to fund your music career? What advice would give to someone who’s interested in pursuing a career in music?
Yes, I’ve been fortunate to obtain licensing deals and build a brand that people want to pay to see so that’s been great. Truly blessed.
The best advice I can give is to never give up. It’s not going to be easy, there will be 10,000 nos before you get one yes but that one yes can change your life! Stay down until you come up and spend time on building your brand from photo shoots to bio to press and make yourself visible!
7.) How do you think the internet and social media affected the music industry and how musicians are able to market themselves? Social media is obviously an extremely important element in today’s world, especially when it comes to business, branding, marketing, etc. With that being said, do you think an artist will be able to survive in today’s music industry if they’re not social media savvy?
Social media and internet has both a positive and negative impact.
Positive is that you can get your music to the people a lot quicker without even leaving the house! You can monetize content in ways you never once were able to through apps, online merch, etc.
Negative would be that it kinda takes away from the mysterious aspect of being an artist because most of us post our every move and there’s not much of a magical mystery like there used to be with artist nowadays. They’re more accessible.
I think unless you have a team running your social media which I like to control my own social media for sure lol it would be hard to survive and be a success! My whole career and major opportunities have ALL if not mostly come from being discovered via my socials.
8.) Artists who try to make music for the general public and make more money are usually seen as “sell-outs.” Do you see it that way and if so, what do you plan to do to make sure your music stays true to your brand and make a good living at the same time without having to “sell out”?
I make music that sounds good to me regardless of what the trends are and what people are doing. I don’t consider anything a sell-out that’s a statement probably made by a consumer who doesn’t understand the music business. You have to do what you have to do. I don’t believe in being a fraud or being fake in your music but changing your style to be more marketable and commercial when you have an opportunity may be what is needed if you haven’t figured out the blueprint by then!
9.) Professionally, where do you see yourself 5 years from now?
Platinum artist and songwriter with a billboard charting hit. Selling out arenas and touring the world. Won’t settle for anything less than that! Check out my new single “True” the video is out on YouTube and streaming on Spotify Apple Music and all major digital online stores! keep an eye on this one.
