Review of the Single “Oh My Damn!” By Christopher The Grey

Alabama-based hip-pop artist, Christopher The Grey, has put forth one of the hottest singles ever to grace the rap genre this year. The single titled “Oh My Damn!” is coming on the heels of his successful collabo with one of the rap legends, Snoop Dogg, on the song titled “So Hot.” Those who know Grey describe him as a ‘powerhouse artist’ with an impeccable appetite for the old-school vibe and unapologetic banging lyricism.

So, when I got wind of the news, I could not help but see what this new stuff was about. You never can tell what an artist is made of unless you review what he is putting forth as music. And that is precisely what I intend to do.

Fast forward, here we are. What is the magic wand behind the single “Oh My Damn!”?

From the very start of listening to the single, one can tell that some of what was written about Grey seems correct after all because you feel that agility and acerbic dexterity that underlines Grey’s rare musical skillset right from the opening vocals and tempo arrangement.

The production is outrightly deft, and the arrangement is dicey, offering a ubiquitous comment characteristic of contemporary hip-pop. The single overall beat has a slightly foreboding, sulky undertone, which is remarkably magnified by Grey’s motivated delivery. The energy he vented into the song drives home whatever message he aimed to send to his listeners, and it’s no surprise that Snoop Dog decided to collabo with him.

Oh My Damn!, Grey’s lead single is designed to herald his upcoming album, so it’s expected to be a successful prelude to what is to come. The song kicks off with a sick, attention-grabbing beat heralded by the rugged, energetic rap verse that accompanies it in perfect harmony. Grey’s vocals were not only robust but full of vitality that defined his genuine artistic quality. The lyrics were eclectic, and you can feel the old-school vibe in the omnipresent flow throughout the entire soundscape of the track.

I was particularly impressed by his choice of quirky vocal prompts and witty verses, which not only added an exact level of crispness to the overall production but also highlighted his originality, showing that he is not a copycat.

This charisma around the artist presents him as a rare entity in his own making for modern rapping. Of course, many other artists are exhibiting similar styles. Still, Grey will always stand out because he knows how to bring his gifted presence and vibe as a distant departure from the copycats and mumble rumble rappers we have these days.

Of course, there is always room for improvement, but you can tell that this rapper has the quality and grit to make it for real in the industry. “Gotta feel me like I’m feeling myself, Gotta feel me like nobody else” are some of the catchy lyrical flows that underscore the talent’s incentive rendition. “Oh My Damn!” is that kind of song that gives you a smoky and appreciative joyride around your neighborhood. It has a bouncing vibe yet mingled with a consistently glaring low groove. The tasty bass gives you a sense of how visceral the correct levels can be. His vocalization is always going to be his most distinct rap feature. His natural and bright mid-register allows him to be nimble and melodic simultaneously. The song is sincerely fun and organic, with a melodiously layered background. With these qualities in between, nothing should stop Grey from making it big in the hip-pop market and from his words, “Burn money for the smell of the vapors/it ain’t about nothing but the papers,” you can tell he’s sure committed to making it.
