As I listen to this trippy new eclectic new sound from Raw Tangent K I can honestly say it is unlike anything that I have ever heard before. The way in which the instruments are being played may seem a bit unconventional; however it exposes the composer’s creative mind. The fact that there are multiple sounds and melodies grabbing for your attention speaks to the energy of the composer. Listening to this album I get the feeling that the composer is like a mad scientist whose first love is experimenting with sounds and melodies. Although a bit overwhelming at times l can appreciate the very animated sounds and melodies that are being played. It is almost impossible to listen to this album and not have your own imagination run wild as well.
I will say that the choice in which the melodies are played seem a bit dark, sort of like the soundtrack to a mystery, suspense or horror film. Music is supposed to invoke emotion and I found myself being surrounded by scary energy at times as if I was watching a horror movie. I see that as a positive reaction. What is the purpose of sound if it doesn’t make you feel? All sound makes us feel something. The beauty of music is the power that it has over us. That being said, there is a time and a place for everything so don’t be surprised if you hear some of these tracks playing in the next popular suspense film, scary movie or even video game.
As for the recordings themselves I believe that the mix and arrangement could have been a bit cleaner, meaning, to include more intro’s transitions and breakdowns. For example if the composer introduces the theme melody and slowly introduces the surrounding melodies it would make for a better listening experience. However, as a fellow musician I was still able to feel the passion and understand where the music is going in terms of sequence and track arrangement. I conclude that if the tracks were arranged better the average listener would get a better feel for the songs.
Another observation I made while listening to the Harlequins Enigma Album is that in my opinion the length of some of the tracks could be a bit shorter. Statistics have shown that playlist users specifically on Spotify, are more inclined to favor songs that are shorter in length. Making them more likely to replay the track or playlist it. I believe that listeners are better off left wanting more rather than feeling as if the music is a bit to monotonous. In addition, something else I noticed during listening to this album is that the songs could have more of a fade out effect to end the tracks rather than a blunt cut of the music the arrangement could have had a subtle ending, this would make for a cleaner sound.
All in all I love the fact that this album has a distinct sound, something that we have never heard before. I believe that the music best suits specific projects and truly think that that if this body of work falls on the right ears, it could go beyond just the average listener but the big screen as well. I hear many of these tracks being the backdrop to film projects particularly mystery, horror or suspense. This makes the title of the album very appropriate.
