Portland-born R&B/soul music and hip-pop superstar, Bleary has released his debut EP tagged “Bad Days.” Juggling between music and a good-paying full-time job, Bleary decided to call it to quit working for others, settling down to release a couple of powerful solos before this new project.
Bad Days is a 9-track EP that conveys Bleary’s genre-fusing masterpiece focusing on love, disappointment/heartbreak, self-growth, and the aftermath. Produced single-handedly by Ozzie Beats, below is what Bad Days offers its listeners.
Bad Day Track-By-Track Review
The EP opens up with Sever Pt. 1, which features Bleary’s versatility in genre fusion. The beat was soft, and the play was laid back, touching off on the singer’s rap ability. The soft hip hop flow and R&B mix deliver a near-perfect rendition that marks the beginning of better things to come from the rest of the project. Sever talks about a taste for the good old moments—a call for better things of the past in the present—the need to remain steadfast and unchanged for the best.
Peace delivers a unique rhythm and structure that often characterizes the rest of the album. Bleary’s vocals were more pronounced compared to the first track. The song reeks of indifference to situation facts. The melodic beat gives it many vibes. Here, Bleary gives in to reality without losing sight of his goals. His flow in this track reminds me of how Tupac rhyme in some of his tracks. This track is dope.
On Weeknight, Bleary incorporated his funk, hip hop, and spoken word ability to inform listeners about some of his losses, acceptance, and how he has managed during times of difficulties. The reverbs and synths convey his emotions in the stressed lyrics. It is such a touching song that reminds you of your ups and downs and how we charted our paths when all isn’t good.
On Candy (Intermission), Bleary repeated his laidback, enduring, and melodic style. The lyrics are more heartfelt, and the dark vibe complimented his sad story of a love that is negatively affecting his health. This is another good song with captivating, ethereal sounds on a dreamy wavelength.
Long Gone delivers super-quality piano riffs on a somber note. The track is reflective, and from the onset, you can tell Bleary is talking about self-doubt, especially when everything around you looks like they’re against you. The beat soars on as he reflects on his crazy lifestyle, showing regret for the misdeed of his past but not losing hope and keep pushing for the better tomorrow characterized by his arrival in California.
One Day was a straight hip hop flow with a powerful and commanding rhythm. The track has a cinematic and melancholic vibe to the overall backdrop. It is a song that talks about heartbreak and disappointment in a relationship. The melody was laced with so much upbeat—a great way to channel his anger while describing his breakup relationship with his girlfriend due to no fault of his. You can feel the frustration at the edge of his lyrics—a very good song.
I Tried delivers another sumptuous rap flow with reflective upbeats that dwells on heartaches and unfancied outcomes in his relationship. Here, Bleary finds himself in betwixt two choices—with darkly spoken words, Bleary renders another sad song dives deep into his endless emotional, substance, and rhythmic flow. There are situations where even though you tried, and you just couldn’t get things to work the way you want.
The song’s feel was moodier on Let Me Go, bearing a texture engulfed in the gloomy atmospheric flow. Once again, the rap carries that heartfelt melancholic reverb that features throughout this EP.
The last song on the project is Don’t See You, and it features a moody rap that connects you to his problem. Bleary talked about casting down the emotional overload that has kept him down. He accepts the person he is, and he has committed to pushing on to achieving better things despite his shortcoming. The way he does this is simply incredible. It was a nice way to round up a wonderful album with real-life experience and real feeling.
