1.) What elements and/or characteristics made you say to yourself that you wanted to do music for a living? Who are your influences/heroes/role models?

We all have been performing music and entertaining since we were young. Seeing bands like KISS, Motley Crue, Metallica, Iron Maiden on stage and in videos doing their thing inspired us to be musicians and want to entertain and perform. One of our favorite bands is KISS. Seeing KISS live the first time when we were young changed our lives and from that point on we knew we wanted to be a band that entertains and amazes people with there music and stage performance and show. Some of us in KILJIN have been performing on stage since the age of 8. We were born with the music bug and we just have to perform. We cant get enough of it!

2.) If you could compare yourself to an already established artist, who would that be and why? If you don’t like to compare yourself, then music-wise, what separates you from other musicians?

A lot of our influences show in our music while still having our own unique twist. Some of our major influences have always been KISS, Metallica, Megadeath, Scorpions, Black Sabbath, Dio, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, David Bowie and others from a time when music reined supreme.

Although a lot of our influences show in our music, we still have our own unique twist and style on each song we write.

I think the thing that separates KILJIN from the others is NOT ONLY our unique style, but also our stage show and stage presence.

3.) Everyone in life goes through adversity of some sort. Is there anything in your life that has any influence on the kind of songs you write? What is the most difficult thing you’ve had to endure on your path to becoming a musician?

When we write music its a combination of story telling as well as personal feelings and experiences. Some of the songs tell a story, while others are kind of like a diary. All are open for interpretation and we fell KILJIN is great at expressing our personality and vibes into every song. So sit back and listen and enjoy because every song will take you into a journey of wonder and possibility.

4.) How do you prepare yourself to write certain songs? What is your song-writing and recording process?

Usually our songwriting method is more independent rather than in a group. Usually one of the members of KILJIN, like the lead or rhythm guitarist for example, will come up with a killer riff and then we will build on to that and go from there. Writing songs come pretty natural to us and we love it!

5.) Unfortunately the music industry is full of talented individuals who just don’t get any recognition for their talent and/or hard work. What do you plan to do to make sure you stand out and get noticed? Would you rather be on a major label or would you rather stay independent? Why or why not? In regards to the music industry itself, do you think that the traditional music industry model as we know it is dead?

The music industry has changed and unless you know someone in the business who happens to know someone that can get your music solicited, then your chances are slim with a record label and you would have a better chance of doing it on your own. To stand out in this business, KILJIN plans on being unique. We get back to our roots of metal while still staying unique and putting a twist on everything. Being on a major label would be nice, however, its not always what its cracked up to be.

I don’t think the traditional music industry model is totally dead, HOWEVER, its sinking fast, which is why so many bands are now doing it on their own and a lot of success doing so.

6.) Are you able to make a living with your music? If so, how were you able to attain a career doing what you love? If not, what do you do in order to fund your music career? What advice would give to someone who’s interested in pursuing a career in music?

Ultimately, it would be amazing to be able to make a living performing and entertaining and do something we love. However, the music industry has changed a lot and there is a lot of competition and a lot of jealousy between bands that gets in the way. But, yes you can be successful and make a living in this industry. It all depends on how tough you are, and how much music you are willing to dedicate your time to. A little luck never hurts either. Nowadays, you have more of a chance making it on your own then trying to wait for someone, like a record label, to notice you. YOU just have to put in the work and money. So, get busy!

7.) How do you think the internet and social media affected the music industry and how musicians are able to market themselves? Social media is obviously an extremely important element in today’s world, especially when it comes to business, branding, marketing, etc. With that being said, do you think an artist will be able to survive in today’s music industry if they’re not social media savvy?

Well, there is good and bad with everything in the world, however, we feel, in most ways, the internet has been great for bands and artists. The digital age makes it so much easier for a band to get their music and material out to their fans and the people. Makes it way easier to get your music distributed and heard. It is wonderful that, with the digital age and the technology we have today, bands are able to record their own music, distribute their music, advertise, promote, book shows and more without a record label. Because everyone in this industry knows that solicitation is boss and that no record labels will even touch your music or even consider you unless you happen to have a buddy in the biz who knows someone who knows someone. Its just a big game they play and it’s because of this game that a lot of great talent and potential big money making bands are overlooked and never considered. That is why I love the internet and the digital age because bands can do it all themselves and still have success.

To answer your next question, YES I feel that if you are going to be successful, then you want to be media and social media savvy or at least hire someone that knows how to do it for you.

8.) Artists who try to make music for the general public and make more money are usually seen as “sell-outs.” Do you see it that way and if so, what do you plan to do to make sure your music stays true to your brand and make a good living at the same time without having to “sell out”?

We feel, in this particular business, certain circumstances require certain actions. It is always good to grow and evolve as a band as well as take suggestions that may help or further your career as a musician, HOWEVER, you also want to stay true to yourself and LISTEN to your fans and what they want.

KILJIN will make sure we stay true to ourselves by listening to the fans! We have always and will always continue to write music and perform in our own style that fits our personality as a band itself. ALWAYS stay true to yourself. If being true to yourself is what got you attention, then why change?

9.) Professionally, where do you see yourself 5 years from now?

KILJIN sees ourselves continuing to tour and perform and creating new and exciting music. Continuing to evolve and grow as a band and continuing to have a great time doing it. Ultimately, we would like be able to take KILJIN to the next level by touring internationally.
