1.) What elements and/or characteristics made you say to yourself that you wanted to do music for a living? Who are your influences/heroes/role models?

I feel this was a gift from God. I was born to do this. I strongly feel that my influences are the people in my life. It’s not about me, it’s about my family and kids and giving them a better life. My heroes are the women in my life that had a part in raising me. My role model is Dame Dash. I like his work and strong independent stances.

2.) If you could compare yourself to an already established artist, who would that be and why? If you don’t like to compare yourself, then music-wise, what separates you from other artists independent or Major?

As an artist we all have a story to tell in different ways. What separates me from other artists is I feel I’m not making shit up. I want to give the world the real me, my pain, my happiness and the in-betweens of my life experiences I put on the table. I don’t claim to be a big drug dealer or live the street life. I’m just a man that went through life experiences and I want to share them.

3.) Everyone in life goes through adversity/hard times of some sort. Is there anything in your life that has any influence on the kind of songs you write? What is the most difficult thing you’ve had to endure while being an independent artist?

There’s a lot of things that influence the kind of songs I write. The most difficult thing I had to endure is being an independent artist. I feel as an independent artist, if you don’t expect to go through or endure hardship you’re already setting yourself up for failure. Just stay focused until your break comes.

4.) How do you prepare yourself to write certain songs? What is your songwriting and recording process?

I write songs like I’m writing a mini-book. There’s a story starting from the first songwriting to the next. When it comes to my process I like to work on more the one song at a time. When it comes to my recording process I like to have a song in already in my head and I just get in the booth and go.

5.) Unfortunately, the music industry is full of talented individuals who just don’t get any recognition for their talent and/or hard work. What do you do to make sure you stand out and get noticed? Would you rather be on a major label or would you rather make money as an independent artist and keep ownership of your content? Why or why not? In regards to the music industry itself, do you think that the traditional music industry model of an artist chasing after labels & not owning their content as we know it is dead?

Staying consistent is key as an independent artist. You need to have that work ethic like you’re on a major label. I would definitely like to be on a major label if the opportunity ever came and it was a deal that my team & I would be satisfied with. Yes, when it comes to ownership of my content that will all have to be worked out. I built this brand with the help of my long time manager Gary Johnson and we are still building, so definitely ownership to me is key to our success and vision. I feel that those ways of an artist chasing labels is slowly fading out. Artists want to keep ownership & control of their content, so yes artists not keeping ownership of their content for the future will die, it’s fading out now.

6.) How are you able to attain a career doing what you love? What advice would you give to someone who’s interested in pursuing a career in music?

I’m able to attain my career because I’m serious about my career. If I don’t put in the work nobody is going to take me seriously, and that’s what I would tell anybody that wants to be a part of this music business. Do it because you love it, but work hard to get that money. The bottom line is that’s what we all want.

7.) How do you think the internet and social media affected the music industry and how independent artists are able to market themselves? Social media is obviously an extremely important element in today’s world, especially when it comes to business, branding, marketing, etc. With that being said, do you think an independent artist will be able to make it in today’s music industry if they’re music is not on social media and they are not social media savvy?

The effects the internet and social media has on the music industry is good for the independent artist. Major labels can shop for artists and the artists get a chance to showcase their talents. The effects are good. No, I don’t think an artist would make it if their music was not on social media. Social media is the way of the world today and if they are not social media savvy it might be harder for them; yes.

8.) Artists who try to make music for the general public/regular music listeners, non-underground sounding music but more commercial sounding music and make more money are usually seen as “sell-outs.” Do you see it that way and if so, what do you plan to do to make sure your music stays true to your brand and make a good living at the same time without having to “sell out”?

I don’t feel artists’ whose music sounds more commercial are sell-outs. They just rather have toned down content in their songwriting so they can generate more revenue.

9.) Professionally, If things go partly the way you and your team are grinding for when it comes to your music and brand, where do you see yourself 5 years from now?

If God continues to bless me with my health and my manager Gary Johnson Jr, & if things we are working on go mostly the way we are grinding for, I feel that in 5 years my music and brand will be generating the revenue for us to grow the Blow_flyy brand even more.
